2010 Kauai Polynesian Festival

The Kamanawa Foundation presents its 9th annual Kauai Polynesian Festival on Memorial Day weekend May 27-30, 2010. The Kauai Polynesian Festival kicks off with a Polynesian Grand Luau on May 27 at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, followed by the Festival on May 28-30 at the Vidinha Stadium soccer field featuring Tahitian, Maori, Samoan and Hawaiian entertainment, Polynesian arts and crafts, solo and group dance competitions, food booths, workshops, and much more. All Kauai residents and visitors are welcome to attend. For more information on the festivities, click on any of the categories to the left.


SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Thursday, May 27, - 5 p.m., Grand Polynesian Luau Celebration
Thursday night kicks off its 4-day weekend of cultural exchanges beginning with a Grand Polynesian Luau Celebration and fashion show at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. The evening will offer a lavish dinner buffet, a Polynesian fashion show and an array of exciting Polynesian Entertainment. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m.

Friday, May 28, 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Vidinha Stadium soccer field - Kauai Polynesian Festival
Guests and participants can partake in island-style food and shop through the Polynesian arts & crafts display and demonstration tent.
11:30Gates to the public open.
12:00Our latest feature event invites visitors and kamaaina to participate in "Celebrate a POLYNESIAN EXPERIENCE" - a hands-on cultural crafts & dance activity. Learn weaving techniques using the fronds of the coconut and hala tree, learn to husk a coconut, fire making and spear throwing, finally let the pros teach you how to dance the hula, make a ti-leaf lei and tie a pareau (sarong), Polynesian style.
3:00The festival will feature island halau hula (schools of dance) who will share their talents in a selection of Traditional and Modern Polynesian dance presentations.
4:00Entertainment on center stage will begin with Oahu's own FAB4, a Hawaiian Contemporary group of four HAWAII STARS winners and participants sharing energetic and heartwarming memorable tunes.
5:00Protocol Ceremonies will commence as Hawaii welcomes friends from New Zealand with chant and Hula. As a tradition, Aotearoa graciously reciprocate. Shortly after that, the competition will begin in the Maori action and Poi Ball dances of Aoteara New Zealand followed by Na Kupuna Hula Auwana Group Competition and Keiki/Opio/Na Wahine Solo & Group Hula Kahiko Competition in ages 6-12, 13-17 & 18-54.


Saturday, May 29, 11:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m., Vidinha Stadium soccer field - Kauai Polynesian Festival
Guest and participants can partake in island-style food and shop through the Polynesian arts & crafts display and demonstration tent.
9:00 On Saturday morning at the Soccer Field, the dance workshops will begin at 9:00am. with Maori action dances, poi ball, Samoan Fire Knife and Hawaiian Hula workshop.
11:30Gates to the public open.

5:00The evening will begin with a Tahitian Protocol Ceremony followed by dance competition in the Tahitian group Otea, Aparima & Ahupurotu categories. Directly after that, Samoa offers their Protocol Ceremony and the evening will culminate with the exhilarating Fire Knife dance competition for age categories Junior 6-12, Intermediate 13-17 and Senior 18 & Over.


Sunday, May 30, 11:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., Vidinha Stadium soccer field - Kauai Polynesian Festival
Guest and participants can partake in island-style food and shop through the Polynesian arts & crafts display and demonstration tent.
9:00 Tahitian dance and drumming workshops will begin on the field.
11:30Gates to the public open.
12:00Hawaiian Contemporary group "the FAB4" will begin the Hawaiian entertainment on center stage.
1:00The competition will begin with Tahitian Ori/solo division ages 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-17, 18-21, 22-25, 26-30, 31-39, 40 & over with Couples division and Drumming competition to follow. A Tahitian Tamure and Awards Ceremony culminate the weekend festivities. Arts & Crafts, food, festival t-shirts will be available for purchase.

Kauai Polynesian Festival:
$25 for three days or $10 per day.
All dance participants and children under 5 free.
